Abstract

Digital detox tourism has become part and parcel of the wellness tourism concept for promoting physical and spiritual wellbeing. It highlights a deeper shift in the global tourism by prioritising absolute wellbeing during holidays in an increasingly digitised world. This research seeks to clarify how digital detox tourism can enhance wellness tourism in the Egyptian tourist destination. The research depended the qualitative approach through carrying out interviews with fifty-one Egyptian experts from the Egyptian tourism sector; in the period from June, 2025 to October, 2025. Additionally, the research also depended on different sources of secondary data related to its subject. The findings demonstrated that digital detox tourism strongly match with wellness tourism, as both of them aim at improving the physical and mental wellbeing of tourists. Implementing digital detox tourism in Egypt is still limited but it can advance wellness tourism and result in many benefits e.g. attracting high spending niche tourists, increasing the tourism demand for some areas in Egypt and fostering Egypt’s image as a digital detox and wellness tourism destination. The research recommends the necessity of more specialised training and better development efforts for the perfect implementation of digital detox tourism in Egypt e.g. setting up technology free holiday resorts and supporting the establishment of specialised travel agencies in organising digital and technology free holidays in Egypt for achieving a global appeal of the digital detox market.
