Towards Smart Tourism Services Based on the Internet of Things: An Empirical Study on Hurghada and Luxor, in Egypt

Abstract

The Internet of Things (IoT) has significantly transformed the tourism industry. reshaping travel design, supply, and experiences. When traveling, people need to utilize smart tourism service systems based on the Internet of Things (IoT) to enhance their journeys’ convenience. Smart tourism service (STS) derives from “smart system initiatives with applications focusing on the tourism sector or destinations. This paper aims to explore the impact of the Internet of Things to provide smart tourism services in airports and travel agencies, which is crucial to provide a smart service. To achieve the aims of the study, the methodology of this research was based on a quantitative approach. A questionnaire form was created and directed to a sample of tourists in Hurghada and Luxor City. The questionnaire was distributed to a random sample of four hundred (400) visitors to Hurghada and Luxor. 353 (88.25%) of them were retrieved. The statistical analysis of the responses was carried out via SPSS v25. Findings reveal that the Internet of Things makes communication faster and easier, leading to improved tourists’ experiences. The research recommended developing the infrastructure by finding smart solutions for its roads so that the city depends on alternative energy and sensors so that sensors and control devices are everywhere.
